Why Document Processing Needs Bring-Your-Own-Storage (BYOS)

When enterprise compliance officers evaluate document extraction software, their primary objection is almost never pricing or accuracy. It is data sovereignty: “Where do our commercial invoices, employee health claims, and bank statements reside when the job finishes?”

In traditional IDP SaaS platforms, customer files are retained indefinitely on vendor servers for model re-training or debugging. This introduces unacceptable compliance risks under GDPR, HIPAA, and SOC 2.

At ParseRelay, we engineered Bring Your Own Storage (BYOS) into our core architecture.

The Problem with Third-Party Data Retention

When you upload sensitive financial documentation to a conventional parser, your data leaves your security perimeter. Even if the vendor encrypts files at rest, their operations team retains access to cryptographic keys and storage buckets.

Furthermore, if the vendor experiences a security incident, your raw PDFs—containing vendor tax IDs, wire routing numbers, and customer addresses—are exposed.

How ParseRelay BYOS Operates

With ParseRelay BYOS enabled:

  1. Direct Signed Upload: Inbound documents are uploaded directly from your client application or email gateway into your private AWS S3 or Cloudflare R2 bucket via short-lived presigned URLs.
  2. Ephemeral In-Memory Processing: ParseRelay worker nodes pull the file into encrypted GPU RAM, execute the Aperture PR-01 extraction pipeline, extract structured JSON fields, and immediately release memory.
  3. Zero Retention at Rest: At no point is the source document payload written to ParseRelay persistent disks. Only the structured JSON result, bounding box coordinates, and metadata audit trail are retained according to your tenant retention policy.
  4. Bring Your Own Key (BYOK): Customers can configure their own OpenAI or Gemini API keys, ensuring that token inference happens under their own enterprise terms of service without third-party model training.
// Sample BYOS Tenant Storage Configuration in ParseRelay
export const storageConfig = {
	provider: "s3", // "s3" | "r2" | "gcs"
	bucket: "enterprise-finance-docs-prod",
	region: "us-east-1",
	kmsKeyId: "arn:aws:kms:us-east-1:123456789012:key/byok-relay-key",
	retentionMode: "zero-storage-ephemeral",
};

Complete Auditability Without Compromise

By keeping storage in your own cloud, your security teams maintain 100% control over IAM policies, geographic data residency, and automated lifecycle expiration rules. ParseRelay acts strictly as an intelligent processing relay—never an unmanaged data silo.
